Imagine an idyllic city, rich in history, full of promise for the future, and thriving in the present. Now imagine it full of smiling people, mouthwatering restaurants and fun festivals all year long. Now you’re picturing Suffolk!
Although rustic and rural in nature, Suffolk is the largest city in Virginia, by land area. With all that room, the city has grown into a beautiful place to call home.
Birthplace of Planters' Peanuts in 1912 and subsequently their mascot Mr. Peanut, Suffolk was the Peanut Capital of the World for over thirty years! Fewer peanuts are grown in the area now, but Suffolkians still celebrate their nutty heritage each year in October during the Suffolk Peanut Festival.
Suffolk is home to a great many festivals, celebrations and just plain fun get-togethers. Visitors this Halloween would discover the Touch a Truck, Train & Trick or Treat celebration going on at the Seaboard Station Railroad Museum, where children can wear costumes, get candy AND touch a real work truck or train.
The fall fun doesn't stop there, though! The Annual Fall Fair takes place at the Hilton Garden Inn Riverfront, and admission is free to all. Family Movie Nights at the Suffolk Visitor Center Pavillon are also free, and include crafts & activities for kids.
The Great Dismal Swamp lies partially in Suffolk, and is protected as a National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge consists of nearly 107,000 acres of forest wetlands, houses, and all manner of plant (maple, atlantic white cypress, miscellaneous flora and fauna) and animal life (black bears, bobcats, otters and bald eagles).
